So I was thinking of some ways to make the battles a little more than a numbers battle.  Here are a few ideas I thought of:

Having different "formations" you could put your fleet into such as the echelon, combat box, finger-four, or vee formation. Then you could make one weak against one formation and strong against another. (For example, the combat box would do twice as much damage to the echelon, but half as much to the vee).  It would work kind of like rock-paper-scissors, but add a little strategic depth to the game.

Having planets clustered in systems and then giving bonuses for controlling a certain system, kind of like what Risk does with Continent bonuses.

That is all I have, but I thought I would throw it out there.

Not for the rock paper scissors idea, but the idea of planets giving bonuses is nice

However I think the default MI formula should be left untouched. Maybe this can be added in as a mod/another game mode? MI is to number possibilities and simple fleet management, just like what Quake is to simply pure fragahollic FFA; however, Quake has CTF, instagib, Team Fortress etc Wink

My thoughts exactly. Smiley

If I were to implement "continent-style" bonuses, I reckon it'd probably only be active on certain maps (set up by the map author). It wouldn't really fit with the current style of random map generation, and some of the custom maps wouldn't be suited either. Quadrants would work well though, I think.

AI diplomacy is probably a little way off. I need to at least get human diplomacy in first. Smiley

I second the motion for having alliances and diplomacy. Me and a friend experimented with this last night by communicating via IM. (We teamed up on one poor guy, then turned on each other like animals).
