I quite like the list of planet names that ships with MI, because it's always awesome to conquer Arrakis. But sometimes you just want to conquer a solar system somewhat closer to home. For that, I give you a list of names of objects in our solar system: http://www.byond.com/members/Jp/files/planetnames.txt (Not attached to the post because it's 280 kb).

The list includes:
- Every planet
- Many of the major moons (I've left many of Jupiter's/Saturn's/Uranus'/Neptune's moons out, because I haven't been able to find a good list yet, and I'm not typing them all out from Wikipedia)
- Basically every asteroid in the solar system (That's why it's 280 kb.)
- Basically every dwarf planet in the solar system (See above).

The file should be large enough for pretty much any map, but there are some issues. The most pertinent one is that basically all the planets will be named things like (433) Eros. All the ones with numbers in front of them are asteroids - there are thousands of the little buggers. Just be aware of that, and it should be fine.

Also, I don't have enough moons for my liking. If anyone finds a good, up-to-date list of the moons of the gas giant planets, preferably in a format that lets me just copy-paste 'em, let me know.

Installation instructions:
For the non-Steam version, find your install directory, go into 'data\base', rename the 'planetnames.txt' file already there to something else (Perhaps 'old_planetnames.txt'), and then copy the new one in.

For the Steam version, you can find the planetnames.txt in Steam\SteamApps\common\mayhem intergalactic\data\base

I'll finish up with a feature suggestion: A priority setting for names in planetnames.txt, so I could specify that Jupiter is 10000 times more likely than the default. Perhaps a number in square brackets in front of each name?

Code:
[30000]Earth
[10000]Luna

[10000]Jupiter
[1000]Io
[1000]Callisto

(15262) Abderhalden

So Earth is three times as likely to show up as Jupiter, which is ten times as likely to show up as Io, which is a thousand times as likely to show up as (15262) Abderhalden.

Good stuff. That is a lot of asteroids.

Don't be afraid of a 280 kb attachment, by the way; feel free to chew up my disk space, I have tons. Smiley  Assuming the forum lets you. (If it doesn't, let me know, there's probably a setting I can change somewhere.)

Your feature request has been noted. Smiley
