I finally got my networking issues fixed, so I will be hosting a dedicated server off and on (Its running off of my laptop, so it will not be availiable when I'm using my laptop outside of my house).  It is listed as "Inilandrial" or "Kumlekar's Server" depending on if my options setup is behaving or not. All of my maps are availiable on there, though many are in beta versions.

I appreciate any Feedback about maps as usual!

Thought I'd add that the server is hosted in California, in case anybody cares much about ping. This would make setting up my server redundant as I'm also on the American West coast. But in case I do anyway, what's the minimum hardware necessary to run a dedi? I figure if I get that apartment I'll build something quiet and energy-efficient and let it run.

Um not much more than the game? You just have to run the .exe with --dedicated-server after it in the command line.

I don't have an exact figure. Less than you'd need to run a graphical instance of the game.

As a point of comparison, the server which runs this entire website, the associated databases, and both instances of Mayhem Central has 360 MB of RAM. The entire server has not exceeded 15% CPU usage during the entire time I've been hosting the dedicated servers. I think that's 15% of one 2GHz core, as opposed to 15% of all four 2GHz cores. The average CPU usage has been 7-8% during this time.

So it's fairly light. Smiley

I don't have reliable figures on bandwidth usage since my stats are all mixed up with website traffic (which undoubtedly dominates). Bandwidth usage would largely depend on what people are doing with it, of course. Certain game configurations will require more updates to be sent on a more regular basis than others, and more clients means more network traffic.

Ark and I are hoping to get FiOS service, which would be 10 down and 2 up. The bottleneck would be my network setup - so I considered tossing in a m0n0wall system in the loop too. At this point it would all depend on the electricity bill.

Hehe... an entire server machine for $45 ($50-55 if you include the pizza) plus running costs. That's not bad going. Grin

I think you'd probably want to buy a new (and therefore clean) pizza box though - better for the electronics. Less gunk for dust to stick on! Also, it wouldn't start smelling after a day.

Ok, I decided to change the server up a bit.  I removed all standard maps, and will only put custom maps on the server.  Anything not made by me will have the creator's name in parenthese after the map name.

No no, to play them without having to download.  The Mayhem central servers have only the standard maps (the lattice maps, milky way small, medium, and large, quadrants, and its deravitives) that are installed with the game, and Quadrants 2.  My server does not include any of the pre-installed maps for play, only ones made by me, or posted on the forums.  Once I run out of room for maps on the select menu (won't take too long) I'll rotate some of them, and ask for opinions on which should stay.

Some sort of folder-based organising thing on the basis of author also seems in order. Maybe some way of indicating that maps are different versions of the same basic theme, too - so you'd select Milky Way, and then in the new 'version' dialog, you'd select 'Medium'.

I don't know if the list needs to be unlimited, but an increase to at least 40 maps is called for.  Obviously we'll need a scroll bar for that.  One thing I would like for dedicated servers is the ability to remove random map from the list.  I want to encourge people who are playing on this server to be trying custom maps, and giving feedback.

At some point I want to do a fully-fledged map selection dialog (like most of Blizzard's games), which would be able to contain an arbitrarily large number of maps, and also display all that author/description info that's currently supported by the map format but never actually shown to users.

The size variation thing is a great idea. Smiley
