Now I see you sumhow supposedly made a dedicated server feature for all to use...but as I search my files...in the folder where game is installed I see no file besides mayhemig.exe and well usually when a game makes a dedicated server feature for all to use there is a completely diff file to use...

I also have started the game gone to Internet MP and clicked Create a Game or what ever and it just instantly assumes I want to run a game with me in it...gives me no options in the menu that comes up to make it dedicated...and it does not ask before popping that menu up if I would like to run it dedicated...

So I ask...how may 1 access this feature that you say is available for public use?

You have to add a parameter on the command line, like this: mayhemig.exe --dedicated

Unfortunately, right now that will crash. I've patched it, and I'm intending for the update to go up within the next 24 hours.

Ok...cuz I was really curious about that...and it caught me off guard...completely...mayb include ingame or somehow globally announce to new gamers how to use it...because I am sure I am not the only 1 questioning this...and I am sure many will be wondering how to access it...seeing as it is done by a command line...not the usual way...

You're right, I should document it better. I'll do that after I fix the crash bug.

You have to add a parameter on the command line, like this: mayhemig.exe --dedicated

Just noticed the above information is wrong. It's actually: mayhemig.exe --dedicated-server

Doh! Sorry about that. Maybe dedicated server functionality does work in the Steam version and I was just typing it wrong?

ok I did test it just now...and I got it working...

so it works...and well now I am trying to figure out how to change the name of the server...as I have it changed ingame for when I run it that way but that doesnt help for when I host dedicated...

EDIT: I searched in my C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\mayhem intergalactic\data\english folder and found the strings.txt file and find in it this:
Quote
%1's server
So I am guessing if I alter that to what ever I want that is what the server name will be when I host dedicated...

If so...be nice to post this sumwhere for all to easily find...for both steam and non steam users...

Actually, no - that's just the default server name for non-dedicated servers. Sorry. Smiley

To change the server name, open %appdata%\MayhemIntergalactic\options.ini and under [general] put servername=Your Server Name. For example, here is Mayhem Central's options.ini:

Quote
[general]
servername=Mayhem Central

[ai]
intelligence=6

As mentioned, I realise the docs are still lacking on this front, and I apologise for that. Maybe I'll make a sticky topic about it.

Well I apparently this entire time in my options.ini file have had under the General section: servername=Stixsworld's Server...yet when I host the dedicated server it appears as just "." without the quotations...

So sumthing is up with it still...

P.S. I am curious tho...if I run server via steam...it runs the mayhemig.exe in the background of PC and barely uses any cpu but...would be possibly then loading the game again but without the command line stuff to play it...be changing the server name?

If so that is where I say that the dedicated server should not be just a command line...but instead a whole new .exe file to help make it so users on steam can easily run a dedicated server then also load the game on the same rig and be able to play on the server without the dedicated server being messed with...for example the changing of the server name...

It shouldn't be doing that. I admit I haven't really checked this out myself recently, so please bear with me until I can sort it out.

Until then, I've put up a rough guide to hosting a dedicated server in the main MI forum.
